People who have the same mental illness are affected differently and each person experiences a variation in the intensity of the illness. There are a range of symptoms that can go from mild to severe and can be experienced short-term or long-term. Remember that conditions can be episodic, which means that people go through phases where they feel good and other times when they’re not at their best. If you experience a mental illness, you must seek help from a doctor or another health professional such as a psychologist or counsellor.

The Federal Government has announced that from 14 February 2023 people who currently hold, previously held or have applied for a Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) or Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) may be eligible for a permanent Resolution of Status Visa (RoS visa). People granted a permanent RoS visa will have the same rights and benefits as all permanent residents, including access to family reunion.

Around 15% of women develop postnatal depression after the birth of their babies. If your partner demonstrates significant changes to her emotions, thinking or behaviour, this may be a sign that something is not going well for her. Some of the changes you may see in your partner are: crying or feeling sad very often being in a low mood or very irritable a lot of the time thinking “I can’t do this” fearing being alone or going out thinking about hurting herself or the baby your partner finds it difficult to be affectionate with you, the baby, or others. A critical part of helping someone is being aware of the signs and symptoms of a mental illness.

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) provides free English language classes to migrants and humanitarian entrants with low English levels to help them settle and participate in the Australian community. If you are eligible, you can now stay in the program longer and the previous 510-hour cap has been removed. People who were previously not eligible may now be eligible. Participating in the AMEP gives you the English you need to get a job, help your children settle and participate more in day-to-day life in Australia.

15 Feb 2024... Information for refugee and migrant men about mental health. If your general practitioner (GP) refers you to a mental health specialist, this can be subsidised under Medicare. Your GP will first ask some questions about your health history, symptoms and situation. Your GP will assess your condition and advise on the type of help you need. This can include: making a mental health assessment creating a mental health treatment plan referring you to a psychiatrist or other mental health professional prescribing medication, if required. Your GP can refer you to a psychologist for 10 individual sessions and 10 group sessions under your mental health care plan in a year. After the sixth session, you will return to your GP, for a review of your progress and a new referral for the remaining sessions.
