Spina bifida
Spina bifida is a lifelong condition that affects a baby’s spine and spinal cord development in the first month of pregnancy. It occurs when the neural tube doesn’t close properly, most often in the lower spine.
This can cause damage to the spinal cord, vertebrae, and surrounding skin, disrupting messages between the brain and body and affecting health, development, and learning. Ongoing medical care and support are usually needed.
